Testing in the Playground

The playground is where you chat with your chatbot in private before anyone else does. You can set its instructions, send real questions, and see exactly how it replies. It is the best way to check your chatbot is ready before you put it on your website.

Where the playground is

Open a chatbot and click Playground at the top of the left sidebar. The screen has two halves. On the left you set the chatbot instructions and see its training status. On the right is a live chat window where you talk to your bot and watch the answers appear.

Checking the training status

At the top of the left panel is a small status card. It shows Trained in green when your chatbot is ready, or Training... in amber while a retrain is running. Below that, it tells you when the chatbot was last trained, or Never trained if you have not trained it yet.

For the chatbot to answer from your content, it needs to be trained first. If the card says never trained, head to the training screen, add your content, and retrain.

Setting the instructions (system prompt)

The Instructions, also called the system prompt, tell your chatbot how to behave. This is where you set its role, its tone, and what it should focus on. You have two ways to fill it in.

Pick a ready-made template from the dropdown to start quickly:

  • Base Instructions: a simple, helpful assistant.
  • General AI agent: a polite company assistant that guides visitors.
  • Customer support agent: focused on solving problems and asking clarifying questions.
  • Sales agent: focused on qualifying leads and encouraging a signup or demo.
  • Custom prompt: write your own from scratch.

You can also type directly into the box to write your own instructions, or edit a template after picking it. As soon as you edit the text, the template switches to Custom prompt. When you are happy, click Save Changes to keep it.

One thing to remember: the playground uses your saved instructions. If you change the prompt, click Save Changes first, then send a message to see the effect. Unlike training data, a prompt change does not need a retrain, because it is applied at the moment the chatbot answers.

Chatting with your chatbot

Use the chat window on the right just like a visitor would. Type a message and press Enter or click send. The answer streams in word by word, and the chatbot remembers the earlier messages in the same test chat, so you can ask follow-up questions.

The chat window shows your chatbot name and avatar at the top, taken from your widget settings. To start over, click the refresh icon in the chat header and the conversation resets.

Playground chats are private

The playground is just for you. Test chats are not saved to your Conversations list, so nothing you type here mixes in with real visitor chats. You can also test a chatbot even if it is disabled or not yet on your website.

Keep in mind that each reply is a real answer, so it uses AI credits just like a live chat. This is normal and expected when you test.

If the answers look wrong

  • Make sure the chatbot is trained, and retrain if you recently changed your content.
  • Adjust the instructions to guide the tone or focus, then save and test again.
  • Add missing content on the training screen, especially for questions the bot could not answer.
  • Review Knowledge Gaps later to see what real visitors asked that the chatbot missed.

When the answers look good, finish the setup:

Frequently asked questions

Do playground chats show up in Conversations?

No. The playground is a private testing space. Your test chats are not saved to the Conversations list, so you can experiment freely.

Does testing in the playground use credits?

Yes. Each reply is a real answer from your chatbot, so it uses AI credits the same way a live chat on your website would.

What are instructions or the system prompt?

They tell the chatbot how to behave, such as its role, tone, and what it should focus on. You can pick a ready-made template or write your own.

Do I need to retrain after changing the prompt?

No. The prompt is applied when the chatbot answers, so you do not retrain for prompt changes. Just click Save Changes first, then test. Changes to training data, like files or pages, still need a retrain.

Why does the chatbot not know my content in the playground?

It has probably not been trained yet, or you added content and have not retrained. Add your content on the training screen, retrain, then test again.
