Creating a Chatbot

To create a chatbot in Inletbase, open the Chatbots section in your dashboard and click Create New Chatbot. You can start from your website so we fill in your logo and pages for you, or set it up manually. This guide walks through both, plus naming your chatbot and what happens once it is created.

Before you begin

Each plan allows a set number of chatbots. If you have already reached that number, the Create New Chatbot button is turned off and a short note tells you why. Upgrading your plan raises the limit. If you are new to chatbots, the chatbot overview explains how everything fits together.

Two ways to start

When the create screen opens, you choose how you want to begin. Both paths end at the same place, so pick whichever suits you.

Start from your website

Enter your website address and Inletbase fetches your brand logo, your name, and a list of page links to train on. This is the fastest way to get going.

Set it up manually

Skip the website step and go straight to naming your chatbot. You add your content yourself afterwards. Good if you do not have a website yet, or you want full control.

Option 1: Start from your website

In the Website URL box, type your address, like https://example.com, and click Fetch Links & Continue. Inletbase then looks at your site and pulls in three things:

  • Your logo, which becomes the chatbot avatar. You can change it later.
  • Your brand name, used to fill in the chatbot name for you.
  • Your page links, added as training data so the chatbot has content to learn from.

If your website has more pages than your plan allows, Inletbase loads the first batch up to your limit and shows a short note. You can add more pages later, or upgrade for more. If the site cannot be reached, you will see a warning and can still continue and set things up by hand.

Option 2: Set it up manually

Click Skip and set up manually to jump straight to the details step without fetching anything. Your chatbot starts empty, and you add files, text, website pages, or Q&A pairs afterwards on the training screen.

Naming your chatbot and setting the Agent ID

On the details step you set two things:

  • Agent Name: The name you and your team see for this chatbot. It is required. If you started from your website, this is filled in for you, and you can edit it.
  • Agent ID (Slug): A short, unique id like my-brand-agent. Inletbase creates it from the name automatically, and you can adjust it while creating the chatbot. It can only use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, and it must be unique in your organization.

The Agent ID matters because it is part of your embed code and is used for API access. For that reason, the Agent ID cannot be changed after the chatbot is created. The chatbot name, on the other hand, can be changed any time from Settings. When everything looks right, click Create Agent.

What happens when you create the chatbot

As soon as the chatbot is created, Inletbase sets it up so you can keep working right away:

  • The chatbot status is set to active.
  • If you entered a website, its domain is added to your allowed domains, so the widget can run on your site.
  • Any pages we found from your website are added as training links.
  • Your logo is set as the chatbot avatar, if we found one.
  • You land on the Files area under Data Sources, ready to add more content.

Next steps

Creating the chatbot is just the first step. To get it ready for visitors:

  1. Train it on your content so it has something to answer from, then train the agent.
  2. Test it in the playground and set its instructions, which tell the chatbot how to behave.
  3. Customize the chat widget to match your brand.
  4. Deploy it to your website with a single script tag.

Common issues

  • "A chatbot with this slug already exists." The Agent ID is taken by another chatbot in your organization. Change it to something unique.
  • The create button is turned off. You have reached your plan's chatbot limit. Delete a chatbot you no longer need, or upgrade your plan.
  • The website could not be reached. Inletbase could not read your site, often because it blocks automated visits. You can still continue manually and add your pages later.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website to create a chatbot?

No. Entering your website is optional. It just gives you a head start by pulling in your logo and page links. You can also choose "Skip and set up manually" and add your content later.

Can I change the Agent ID later?

No. The Agent ID, also called the slug, is fixed once the chatbot is created because it is used in your embed code and API calls. You can still change the chatbot name any time in Settings.

Does creating a chatbot train it?

Not on its own. If you started from your website, the pages we found are added as training data, but you still need to train the agent for the chatbot to use them. If you set up manually, add your content first, then train.

How many chatbots can I create?

It depends on your plan. If you have reached your plan limit, the Create New Chatbot button is disabled and Inletbase shows the reason. Upgrading raises the limit.

Where do I set the chatbot personality or instructions?

In the Playground. There you can pick a starter template or write your own system prompt that tells the chatbot how to behave.
